Our Workmanship Warranty and Satisfaction Guarantee

A deck should give you years of good weekends, not a list of things to fix. That’s why we stand behind every build long after the last board goes down.

Our workmanship warranty covers the quality of our build, the framing, the fasteners, the railings, and the finish work. If a problem ever traces back to how we built it, we come back and correct it at no cost to you. You won’t get a runaround or a stack of fine print. You’ll get the team that built your deck, back on site, making it right.

On top of that, you’re covered by the manufacturer warranties on your decking and railing materials. Quality composite brands like Trex and TimberTech carry long product warranties against rot, fading, and splitting, and we install everything to spec so those warranties stay valid.

What Makes Us Different From Other Deck Builders

Plenty of companies can nail boards to a frame. The difference shows up in the parts you don’t see: how they price, who actually does the work, and whether the deck still feels solid in ten years. Here’s where we part ways from the typical crew.

We don’t subcontract your project out. The team that designs your deck is the team that builds it, start to finish. A lot of builders hand the job to whatever crew is free that week, which is how details get lost and no one takes the blame when something’s off.

We price it fixed, and we price it honest. Some contractors lowball the quote to win the job, then pad the bill once the work is underway. You get a written, line-item price from us, with permits included, so the number you sign is the number you pay.

From Design to Build: What to Expect

A deck project shouldn’t feel like a mystery. You should know what happens next, who’s doing it, and roughly when it’ll be done. We lay that out from day one, so there are no awkward silences and no wondering where your project stands.

How We Keep Your Deck on Track

  • A clear timeline and scope before we start, not a vague “few weeks.”
  • Materials ordered up front, so your build doesn’t stall waiting on boards.
  • One crew from first cut to final railing, never handed off mid-project.
  • Honest updates if weather or a permit shifts the schedule, no silent delays.

Building Decks on Philadelphia Rowhome and City Lots

City decks are a different animal than suburban ones, and a lot of builders don’t want the headache. Narrow lots, shared walls, no driveway to stage materials, and old foundations all add up. We’ve spent 16 years solving exactly these problems, so the things that stop other contractors are
routine for us.

Access is usually the first hurdle. On a Fishtown or South Philly rowhome, there’s often no side yard and no rear alley wide enough for a truck. We carry materials through the house or hand them over rooftops when we have to, and we protect your floors and walls while we do it. It takes more planning, not less skill.

Then there’s the build itself. City lots are tight, so every inch counts. We design decks that maximize a small backyard or turn a flat roof into real living space, while keeping the footprint legal. Footings still go 30 inches down to clear the frost line, even when we’re working in a 12-foot-wide yard.

Licensed, Insured and PA-Registered Deck Builders

Anyone can call themselves a deck builder in Philadelphia. Far fewer can prove they’re licensed, insured, and registered with the state, and that difference protects both your home and your wallet. Here’s exactly what we carry and why it matters to you.

We’re a registered Pennsylvania Home Improvement Contractor, license #1234567. State law requires that registration for anyone doing home improvement work, and our number appears on every contract and every permit we file with L&I, so you can verify it yourself in under a minute. We also carry full insurance, both general liability and workers’ compensation.

Philadelphia weather is tough on a deck. Humid summers swell and warp wood, freeze-thaw winters crack and loosen fasteners, and shaded city yards stay damp long enough to grow mold. The material you pick decides whether your deck shrugs that off or fights it every year. We build with all four major options and steer you toward the one that fits your space, your budget, and our climate.

Pressure-Treated Wood

The affordable workhorse, roughly $15 to $25 per square foot installed (Philadelphia estimate). It’s strong and budget-friendly, but our wet weather means you’ll seal or stain it every year or two to keep it from cracking and graying. Best when you want a solid deck without the premium cost.

Cedar and Hardwood

Cedar and hardwoods like Ipe bring real warmth and beauty, around $25 to $60 per square foot installed depending on species (estimate). They naturally resist rot and insects, but Philly sun and rain still call for periodic staining to hold their color. A strong pick when looks lead the decision.

Composite (Trex and TimberTech)

The option we install most, roughly $30 to $45 per square foot (estimate). Composite handles humidity, won’t splinter, and resists the fading and rot that plague wood in our climate. An occasional rinse is the only upkeep, and it holds up for 25-plus years.

PVC and Vinyl

Fully synthetic and the most weather-proof choice, about $35 to $50 per square foot installed (estimate). PVC laughs off moisture, which makes it the smart pick for rooftop decks and shaded rowhome yards that never fully dry out. Light, tough, and nearly maintenance-free.

A large elevated composite deck with charcoal gray decking, black metal railings, and a covered porch area with recessed ceiling lights and open soffits. A side staircase with matching railings provides yard access — an excellent example of a high deck remodel for Philadelphia homes.

Open railings frame a lush garden view at dusk, creating the perfect outdoor living space in Philadelphia.
A beautiful hardwood deck renovation showcasing rich mahogany composite boards, a modern white home exterior with large sliding glass doors, and clean minimalist outdoor furniture. This bright, open deck design adds significant curb appeal and outdoor living value to any Philadelphia home remodel.

How Long Does It Take to Build a Deck?

A standard deck takes one to three weeks to build once permits clear. Larger or rooftop projects run longer. In Philadelphia, L&I permit approval adds time up front, which we handle for you so the schedule stays on track.

How Much Does It Cost to Build a Deck in Philadelphia?

Most decks in Philadelphia run $30 to $75 per square foot installed, or roughly $8,000 to $30,000 depending on size, material, and design. Rooftop and multi-level builds sit at the higher end. We quote a fixed price up front.

Composite vs. Wood Decking: Which Is Right for You?

Composite costs more up front but barely needs upkeep and lasts 25-plus years, ideal for Philly’s damp weather. Wood is cheaper to install but needs sealing every year or two. For most homeowners here, composite wins long term.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About Deck Building

Building a deck in Philadelphia comes with real questions, especially around permits, costs, and city rules. Rowhomes, tight lots, and L&I requirements make our market different from the suburbs, and the answers matter before you start.

These are the questions Philadelphia homeowners ask us most. We answer them straight, with no jargon and no runaround, so you know exactly what to expect from your project.

Yes. Almost every deck in Philadelphia needs a building permit from the Department of Licenses and Inspections (L&I), and any deck more than 30 inches above grade always requires one. We pull the permit and schedule the inspections for you, so your deck is built to code and passes the first time.

Yes, decks can be built year-round in Philadelphia. Footings are dug at least 30 inches deep, below the frost line, so cold weather doesn’t affect the foundation. Winter often means shorter wait times and faster scheduling, making it a smart time to build before the busy spring season.

Check licensing, insurance, and experience with older homes. Ask about permits, inspections, written contracts, and warranty terms. Review past projects in neighborhoods similar to yours.

The EZ Deck Permit is a simplified, faster permit for small residential decks. Your deck qualifies if it’s attached to a single-family home, located in the backyard, and no larger than 160 square feet, or up to 216 square feet with intermediate posts. Larger or rooftop decks need a standard permit, which we also handle.

Yes. Rooftop decks require a building permit, and usually a zoning permit, through L&I. The deck surface can’t sit more than 48 inches above the roof’s midpoint, and railings max out at 42 inches. Some neighborhoods restrict roof decks through zoning overlays, and historic districts may need Historical Commission approval. We check all of this before we start.

An EZ Deck Permit is often issued the same day or within a few days. A standard deck permit that needs full plan review usually takes a few weeks, and rooftop or zoning-related decks can take longer. We manage the entire process and timeline, so permitting never stalls your project.
